Marathon travel insurance from Yellow Jersey is designed for runners taking on everything from marathon majors like Berlin, London and New York to shorter races, trail runs and ultra marathons around the world.
Standard travel insurance often excludes organised sporting activities or applies restrictive conditions. Our specialist cover is built for runners travelling abroad to race.
Whether you’re heading overseas for a city marathon, half marathon, trail ultra or multi-day endurance event, cover can help protect against medical costs, cancellation and unexpected disruption.
Use our simple quote tool to arrange specialist travel insurance for marathon, trail and ultra runners competing abroad.
Ask yourself two questions about your current travel insurance –
Have I checked if it covers me for an amateur competitive event?
e.g. Berlin Marathon
Have I checked if it covers me if the primary purpose of travel is running?
e.g. Running training camp
Just like you wouldn’t enter a race unprepared, you shouldn’t travel without the right cover. From city marathons to 100km trail ultras, Yellow Jersey’s marathon running travel insurance is designed to support runners taking part in events of all distances.
We’ve made it simple: our policies clearly state what’s covered. No confusing exclusions or assumptions.
Whether you’re chasing a PB in Berlin, running for charity in New York, or tackling a 100-mile trail race in the Alps, we’ll keep you protected before, during, and after your event.
Standard travel insurance often excludes marathon and ultra-marathon events, particularly if they’re timed, competitive, or exceed a certain distance. This can leave you exposed to significant costs if you’re injured, fall ill, or need to cancel your trip.
Here’s why our ultra-marathon travel insurance goes further:
Race Participation Cover: Entered a marathon or ultra? We include cover for taking part in organised running events. Races over 10k are typically excluded from travel insurance, especially the basic options on price comparison sites.
Emergency Medical Care: If you’re injured during your race, we cover emergency treatment, hospital stays, and repatriation. This includes the cost of mountain rescue if you are competing in a mountainous region such as the Alps.
Trip Cancellation: Can’t travel or take part due to illness or injury? Our cover helps recover your costs, including race entry fees.
Travel Delay & Disruption: Delays happen. We offer protection against the knock-on costs of missing your race due to travel issues.
Running Kit Cover: Expensive running watch? Cover it with us as a valuable for your trip.
Peace of Mind for Support Crews: Travelling with a partner or family? We offer options to cover them, too.
With Yellow Jersey, you’re covered from your front door to the finish line, no matter how far you run.
A Travel lots, pay less
Committing to an annual policy can often work out better value than buying cover for each trip, while still keeping you protected for every weekend marathon adventure or week-long running holiday abroad.
Plus, our policies can cover multiple sports, so you could be set for your summer adventures and still have cover ready for your winter skiing trip; no last-minute insurance scramble required.
B No commitment
Not travelling all the time, or not ready to sign up for a full year? No worries. Our short-term, single-trip policies might cost a little more per trip, but they give you all the flexibility you need and the same handy suite of covers as our annual travellers.
Heading off with your other half or the whole gang? We think that should be fun, not a headache for your wallet. That’s why couples get a break on the second traveller. One policy covers you both, and let’s be honest, one set of claims is usually enough drama for anyone.
Families get an even sweeter deal. Extra kids are added at a lower rate, so a family of four ends up paying just a little more than two adults. Single parents, don’t worry, the same clever scaling applies. Basically, we won’t charge you double just because there are more of you.
It all makes sense: more people on one policy doesn’t mean double the risk, and it certainly doesn’t mean double the paperwork. So grab your crew, pack your bags, and enjoy the trip. We’ve got the cover sorted at a fair price, no fuss, no nonsense.

When buying your holiday insurance from us, add marathon running, ultra running, or whatever your sport as an activity, and we’ll automatically add the correct sports pack to your cover. Each sports pack contains cover for lots of different sports, so make sure to have a read through and see all of the activities you are covered for. Any standard travel insurance policies exclude organised running events, especially those over 10km. Marathons and ultra marathons are often categorised as high-risk or endurance sports, so you need a policy that explicitly includes them – like ours.
Yes, our policy includes cover for ultra marathon events, including trail ultras, mountain ultras, and multi-day endurance events, provided they are non-professional and non-sponsored. You just need to let us know what activity you will be doing on your holiday, and we’ll apply the correct sports pack.
We cover officially organised running events of all distances. Running the 300k La Petite Trotte à Léon in the Alpes? Rather you than me, but we’ll cover you.
Yes, cover is available for multi-day events.
We cover all ultra and fell running up to 4000 meters. If you are entering an event that will take you higher than this get in touch, and we will see what we can do for you.

If you have a few training trips booked ahead of a race, you can take out an annual travel and cover all of your trips for the whole year.
If you fall ill or are injured before you travel and are medically certified as unfit to participate, we’ll cost of your trip and race entry fees, provided your condition was not pre-existing and undisclosed.
We offer disruption cover which can help if a travel delay or cancellation causes you to miss the start of your holiday, and our policies include event entry fee protection if something prevents you from taking part in your event, including travel disruption.
Yes. Our policies can be extended to include non-participating travel companions, so everyone travelling with you is protected.

Marathon race entry fees and associated travel costs are often booked months in advance. Flights, accommodation and race registrations are usually arranged long before race day, particularly for major international events and popular ultra marathons.
If illness, injury or another insured event prevents you from travelling, specialist travel insurance can help protect the financial cost of cancelling your trip. This can include prepaid flights, accommodation and other travel arrangements made specifically for the race.
While marathon organisers do not usually refund race entry fees if you are unable to participate, travel insurance can provide protection for the wider costs associated with your trip if something unexpected prevents you from travelling.
This can be particularly important for runners travelling internationally to participate in events such as the Boston Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, destination marathons or ultra marathon races, where travel costs can be significant.
Arranging travel insurance when you book your trip helps ensure that your travel investment is protected if injury, illness or disruption prevents you from reaching the start line.
If you are travelling abroad to take part in a marathon such as the Berlin Marathon, Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon or New York City Marathon, specialist travel insurance is strongly recommended.
When runners travel internationally for a race, there are several risks that standard travel insurance policies may not address clearly. These can include participation in organised sporting events, the cost of overseas medical treatment if you are injured while running, and the financial impact if illness or injury prevents you from travelling.
Specialist marathon travel insurance is designed for runners travelling to races abroad. It can provide protection for medical emergencies, trip cancellation and disruption, helping runners recover prepaid travel costs if something unexpected prevents them from participating.
