Why do I need a specific Cycle Travel Insurance?

In much the same way as you buy travel insurance for winter sports, we have made cycling travel insurance simple and easy to understand. Buying travel insurance for cycling and triathlon has always been needlessly complicated, so our aim has been to make the cover we offer people cycling abroad absolutely clear.

We have worked with our customers to design a cycle travel insurance product which fits the needs of cyclists and triathletes, without sacrificing any aspect of normal travel insurance cover.

If you already have travel insurance, ask yourself two simple questions:

• Have I checked it covers holidays where the primary purpose is cycling, e.g. a training camp?
• Have I checked it covers me if I’m taking part in a timed event, e.g. a sportive or triathlon?

Following our detailed customer research we realised many people were unaware travel insurance provided by their work or banks excluded claims if they came off their bike whilst on a cycling specific holiday. Some travel insurers will cover cycling if its an incidental part of your holiday, i.e. you hired a bike for a day with your family, but not if the primary purpose of the trip is cycling. So if you were racing an Ironman in Austria, taking part in the Mallorca 312 or simply training with a group in the Pyrenees, your normal travel insurance is likely to be inadequate.

Further, the EHIC card protection is only valid if you get taken to a state hospital in Europe. Most mountain resorts only have private hospitals whilst state hospitals are few and far between in most of Spain and Portugal.

**NOTE** While our travel insurance provides cover for downhill mountain biking, we currently only cover it for leisure. Downhill mountain bike racing is excluded under our policy. We consider downhill mountain bike racing to include timed events which begin at the top of a mountain, and finish at the bottom. This exclusion does not apply to mountain bike races which involve elements of riding down hills, such as cross country or enduro events.

We can supply our cycle travel insurance to individuals, families, and couples as annual or short term policies. With discounts available for Families and Couples, there is no need to purchase separate annual travel insurance if you’re not all going to be riding.

• For a family policy with two adults, your first child will be added to the policy for half the price, and any more will be added for free.

If you are taking several trips over the course of the year, it may work out as better value to take out an annual policy. By spreading the risk over 12 months, we can reduce the rates for you, while still providing cover for every race, holiday and training camp you enjoy abroad.

Many travel insurance companies include ‘cycling’ under their list of covered activities, but then have restrictions on the type of riding you can do. They might allow an afternoon’s pedalling with the family but exclude your sportive, so double check the level of cycling cover when getting a quote.
